update Optus will sell Apple's 8GB 3G iPhone for the outright price of AU$729 and AU$849 for the 16GB model, when purchased with Optus prepaid SIM cards.

The iPhone will also be available post-paid on the Optus network for $0 upfront for the 16GB iPhone 3G on an AU$79 capped plan over 24 months, with an included monthly data allowance of 700MB. A range of 12- and 24-month plans will also be available, with cheaper monthly caps attracting additional handset charges.

The cheapest option involves an AU$19 minimum monthly spend and handset repayments of AU$21 per month for the 8GB model. This plan includes AU$50 of calls and messages and a 100MB data allowance.

New and existing Optus prepaid customers will receive bonus mobile data allowances when recharging their prepaid plans, and customers purchasing an iPhone will receive a start-up bonus of AU$400 credit. All iPhone customers will receive free unlimited data usage for the first month when the iPhone is purchased before 31 August.

All iPhones purchased with a prepaid SIM will be network locked to Optus with an unlocking fee of AU$80 if applied for in the first six months after the original date of activation, or after AU$80 of prepaid credit has been purchased.

HOW CAN OPTUS DO THAT!?!? How can they justify selling the same product at $550 dollars more than the US??

Going about selling an iphone for $850 completely contradicts the policy of apple trying to sell the products to everyone for a reasonable price...at this rate they're not ging to be reaching their 100 million iphones being sold in 3 months!!

in my honest opinion the people at optus are being greedy, power hungry f*****s who need to re-assess the situation and agree on a price that 10 million can afford! thanks for letting my gett that off my chest...

@van graham: Optus are selling it outright; the price you're thinking of in the US comes with a two-year contract.

If you want to make a fair comparison, compare the post-paid deals with a 24 month contract, where a 16Gb ipod is going to cost you, at most, $504 (plus call charges, of course).

Thanks for the bonus homophobia too, it really helped win me over to your side of the argument.

@Van Graham. If you read about why Steve Jobs stated the prices of the 3G iphone will be dramatically lower than the previous iphone is that Apple now aimed to make profits off the iphone in a different way rather than making money off sales of iphones.

Apple is looking to sell the iphone to carriers like Optus and Vodafone for the set amount but ask them to subsidize the phone and make money off its 3G services. Now if you dont sign a contract with a carrier then the carrier is OBVIOUSLY going to lose out. They aren't 'power hungry f*****s' as you state.

You need to read more and stop thinking the world is against you.
