The DOM xml package in php5 is quite robust, having used it in a number of projects currently in production. A word of warning though - if you are using third-party hosting, be sure to check that the "dom" package is configured and available (even though the official line from php is "they are part of the PHP core".

If you have access to the phpinfo() page look for the '--disable-dom' flag in the "Configure Command" section. If dom is not available on a typical nix hosting service they may be reluctant to recompile and reconfigure the installation.
